A screengrab of a page from a textbook is being shared on twitter by many users on Monday i.e (15 Jan 2019) which lists the ''advantages of dowry" claiming that it is an excerpt from a Social Science book in Gujarat.
All India Mahila Congress tweeted the image with the caption that read:
"Ugly display of Gujarat Model .....Teaching kids "Advantages of dowry" Social science textbook excerpt is BJP's idea of women empowerment. We want to remind
@CMOGuj about Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961 and by IPC 498a, the offence is Cognizable, non-compoundable and non-bailable"
The image listing the advantage include the marriage of ugly girls, attracting handsome and unwilling boys, affects the love and affection a husband shares for his wife, among others which glorifies the regressive idea about dowry.
The image had gone viral after Kavitha Lankesh had tweeted it with the caption, “Women empowerment? Bullshit! A page from a social science book for the Gujarat Education Board . This shit is being taught to millions of children across Gujarat.”
Twitter users @Deep4IND and @amanpreet9954 shared the images that was tweeted by @kavithalankesh whose tweet has now been deleted.
When we google using some keywords like dowry from textbook , we found several images and one of the image with the title "Dowry praised in sociology material.." lead us to the Deccan Herald article dated Oct 20, 2017 that detailed the page was from study material in Bengaluru college.
The article clearly states that this image is not from textbook of Gujarat Board and it was an old news too.
From the article itself we found that the original post was made by a Facebook user "Rithika Ramesh" two years ago with the caption that read :
This is the status of education in reputed institutes in India. In a Sociology class of 60, no student or faculty member stands up against this bullshit.
This is the study material provided by St. Joseph's college, Shanti Nagar, Bengaluru, to a B.A. student.
We conclude that the news which was spreading with the claim that Advantages of Dowry are being taught to students in Gujarat is partially fake because the excerpt was from a study material which was provided by a college in Bengaluru.
Not from Gujarat but from Bengaluru.
KNOW THE TRUTH..
