Girish Bhardwaj is known as Sethu Bandhu or Bridge man of India. He has built around 127 eco- friendly and low cost hanging bridges in remote villages in India. 68-years old Girish has won the Padma Shree awards in the year 2017.
Most of the construction projects are not coming under work as required. These projects are in the rural parts of the country. He graduated with a Mechanical Engineering in 1973 from the PES college of Engineering in Mandya. Later in 1975 he established a company named “Rational Engineering Industry” at Sullia. Over the last 27 years he has constructed the foot bridge. At present it has been renamed as Ayasshilpa.
"In some places we had to halt the work due to the lack of funds. In such case, I would utilize my contacts and connect the people to potential resources. Normally we get a warm welcome. In some places it takes sometimes to break the ice. But we make it a point prove to involve local people and ensure that they take the ownership of the project. Girish has a team of 30 experts, at SFB (Scudder Fall bridge) construction. Most of these bridges are constructed under the government schemes, the initiative is mostly raised by the community.
He shared his Award with his team member. He explained- he designed the and his team take forward the process to construct the bridge. Construction of the bridge makes him happy.
There were many villages where people struggled to travel due to the absence of a bridge. Now those villagers are happy, and this charged him up to work more ahead.
